1-10-2019 Political Nuggets….

Washington Brief

  • Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) has decided to seek the Democratic nomination for president, according to sources. She is finalizing an announcement in California around Martin Luther King Day, the sources said, in search of a telegenic location that could give her a “Springfield moment” similar to former President Barack Obama’s campaign announcement in 2007. (KCBS)
  • President Donald Trump is set to travel to the U.S.-Mexico border in Texas today as he makes the case for his proposed border wall on the 20th day of the partial government shutdown. Along the border, the federal government has already started surveying land and announced plans to begin construction, while many landowners have rejected buyout offers and are preparing to fight the administration in court. (The Associated Press)
  • The Democratic-led House continued to push through measures designed to put pressure on Republicans, including a resolution to intervene in a lawsuit challenging the 2010 health care law and a stand-alone fiscal 2019 Financial Services spending bill that would reopen the Treasury Department, IRS and other agencies through the end of fiscal 2019. Eight Republicans voted with Democrats to pass the Financial Services appropriations bill, and three Republicans defected and joined the Democrats to pass the health care resolution. Roll Call)
