Washington Brief

  • Russian President Vladimir Putin said the United States must reduce its diplomatic staff in the country by 755 employees from the approximately 1,200 who work there now. His remarks came after the White House said President Donald Trump would sign legislation to impose new sanctions on Russia. (The New York Times)
  • After critical tweets by Trump regarding China’s handling of North Korea, top presidential advisers met to craft economic measures designed to punish China. A final decision on such measures is expected this week. (Politico)
  • Senate Republican leaders are set to meet today for the first time since last week’s failure to pass health care legislation. A Food and Drug Administration reauthorization bill is now on the Senate’s calendar, and Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) has said he would like to address the debt ceiling before the chamber leaves for its August recess.   • Vice President Mike Pence arrived in Estonia, the first stop in a three-country trip that includes Georgia and Montenegro. The visits are meant to highlight U.S. ties with Eastern European and Baltic leaders. (ABC News)
