Washington Brief

  • President Donald Trump criticized the congressional testimony of former Federal Bureau of Investigation Director James Comey, saying: “Despite so many false statements and lies, total and complete vindication…and WOW, Comey is a leaker!” Trump’s remarks came a day after Comey testified before the Senate Intelligence Committee. (The Washington Post)
  • The House Republican Steering Committee recommended that Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.) lead the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee. If approved by the House Republican Conference, Gowdy will replace Chairman Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah), who is leaving Congress at the end of the month. (Politico)
  • The House voted 233 to 186 to pass legislation that would overhaul the 2010 Dodd-Frank law by loosening many financial regulations put in place after the 2008 financial crisis. The Senate is unlikely to pass the bill. (The Wall Street Journal)
