Washington Brief

  • Former Federal Bureau of Investigation Director James Comey will testify today before the Senate Intelligence Committee. In his opening statement, published Wednesday, Comey said that President Donald Trump asked him in late March to “lift the cloud” put over his administration by the FBI’s Russia probe. (Politico)
  • Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats and National Security Agency Director Mike Rogers declined to say during congressional testimony on Wednesday whether Trump asked them to push back against the FBI’s Russia investigation. (The Washington Post)
  • Montana Republican Greg Gianforte, who was charged with assaulting a reporter the night before he was elected to the state’s at-large House seat, apologized Wednesday and said he would send $50,000 to the Committee to Protect Journalists as part of a settlement. (The New York Times)
  • The House is poised to pass legislation this week that would roll back Obama-era financial regulations enacted in response to the 2008 financial crisis. The measure is unlikely to become law since it isn’t expected to garner enough support in the Senate. (The Wall Street Journal)
