Washington Brief

  • The Senate Intelligence Committee issued two subpoenas to the businesses of former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn, who invoked his Fifth Amendment rights in response to a previous subpoena issued by the panel (Politico). President Donald Trump retained lawyer Marc Kasowitz to help him handle investigations into potential ties between Russia and his presidential campaign. ( The Washington Post)
  • Forty-seven percent of voters said Trump intended to hinder the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s probe into alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 election when he fired James Comey, according to a new poll. (Morning Consult)
  • Congressional Republicans raised concerns with Trump’s fiscal year 2018 budget plan. Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn (Texas) said the blueprint “won’t pass as proposed.” (The Washington Post)
  • The Congressional Budget Office today is expected to publish its cost estimate of the American Health Care Act – the House GOP’s legislative effort to replace the 2010 Affordable Care Act. If the nonpartisan CBO does not conclude that the House-passed bill would reduce the federal deficit by at least $2 billion over a decade, the House may have to vote on another version of the measure in order to expedite consideration in the Senate.
