Washington Brief

  • President Donald Trump’s budget for fiscal year 2018 calls for $3.6 trillion in spending cuts over the next decade, taking aim at farm programs, student assistance, Obamacare and Medicaid. The proposal is likely to be changed by lawmakers on Capitol Hill. (Bloomberg News)
  • Trump reportedly urged director of national intelligence Dan Coats and National Security Agency Director Michael Rogers to publicly push back against the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s probe into possible coordination between Russia and Trump’s presidential campaign. The two intelligence officials refused to comply with the requests. (The Washington Post)
  • Former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn misled the Defense Department about his financial ties to Russian businesses and government officials, according to a letter written by the top Democrat on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee. Flynn is refusing to comply with a Senate subpoena. (The New York Times)
  • The Senate voted 82-13 to confirm Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad (R) as the next U.S. ambassador to China. (Reuters)
