  • Several House Republicans are trying to find a way to assuage concerns by moderates about how to handle pre-existing conditions in the GOP’s health care bill, with new legislative language expected today. White House officials say they want to see a floor vote on Thursday. (Politico)
  • Half of U.S. voters, including 48 percent of Republicans, are not in favor of an amendment to the House GOP’s health care bill that would allow states to opt out of certain protections for pre-existing conditions, according to a new poll. (Morning Consult)
  • President Donald Trump spoke by phone with Russian President Vladimir Putin for the first time since Trump ordered a U.S. missile strike on Syria in early April. The two leaders discussed North Korea’s nuclear program and how the United States would send a representative to Syrian ceasefire talks in Kazakhstan. (CNN)
  • Congressional Democrats declared victory in securing funding for coal miners’ health care in this week’s must-pass spending bill, and they’re now vowing to continue efforts to fund retirement savings plans for working class Americans when Congress considers legislation to fund the government past Sept. 30.
