Washington Brief

  • With a victory over President Donald Trump in congressional negotiations over a spending bill for the rest of the fiscal year, Democratic leaders on Capitol Hill expressed renewed confidence that they can block the president’s agenda if Republican leaders need their votes. (The Washington Post)
  • Trump said he wants the House GOP’s health care bill to protect preexisting conditions, and said the current proposal is “not in its final form right now.” Meanwhile, congressional Republicans say they are getting close to a health care vote. (HuffPost)
  • Trump’s warm words and willingness to engage with world leaders such as Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un could be seen as the pillar of his foreign policy doctrine. (USA Today)
  • Rep. Joaquin Castro (D-Texas) said he will not challenge Republican Sen. Ted Cruz for his Senate seat next year. Democratic Rep. Beto O’Rourke is now expected to secure the party’s nomination. (The Texas Tribune)
