Washington Brief

  • President Donald Trump said he would be willing to back down from his demand that funding for a border wall be included in a government spending bill expected later this week. Removing that demand would increase the odds of passing legislation before Friday night’s deadline and avoid a government shutdown on April 29. (The Associated Press)
  • The latest draft of the House GOP’s health care plan would allow states to opt out of some consumer protections. The proposal has support from members of the conservative House Freedom Caucus, while many moderates have yet to weigh in on the plan. (Politico)
  • Sen. Mark Warner of Virginia, the top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, said the panel is hiring two additional staff members to help handle its investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election. (CNN)
  • Former President Barack Obama spoke publicly for the first time since Trump took office. He steered clear of commenting on the 45th president and instead urged young people to participate in politics. (The New York Times)
