Washington Brief

  • The Senate will consider a motion to invoke cloture on Judge Neil Gorsuch’s nomination to the Supreme Court this morning. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) is expected to change the body’s rules by invoking the “nuclear option” to force a final confirmation vote on Gorsuch for Friday. (The Hill)
  • The House Rules Committee may consider changes to the GOP’s health care plan backed by President Donald Trump. One potential change would provide for high-risk pools. (The Washington Post)
  • The Trump administration is courting House Democrats in an effort to make progress on tax reform. While some Democratic lawmakers want infrastructure coupled with a tax overhaul, no consensus has emerged. (The Wall Street Journal)
  • Trump shook up his National Security Council on Wednesday, removing political adviser Steve Bannon and adding the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and his secretary of energy. Bannon’s removal was welcome news to lawmakers on Capitol Hill. (Bloomberg News)
